Happy New Year!

Welcome back!  I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing, healthy and fun break with family and friends.   We are jumping right back into our learning.  It is amazing how quickly this next half of the year goes.   I appreciate all support in encouraging your child to remain engaged and focused on Best Effort in the classroom.

There is no official homework this week.  As always, I expect your child to be reading 15-20 minutes a day.  This should be a mixture of fiction and non-fiction text.   Reading together with your child is a terrific opportunity to share language, ideas and great stories!  My hope is that more students will participate in taking AR quizzes as a way to keep track of their word count.

We are setting a few goals to accomplish by the end of the year.  Each student is choosing an academic and personal goal to strive for by the end of the year.  Personal goals are easy for them to choose, but it is hard to focus on a learning goal.  Talk with your child today about something he or she could work to improve upon by the end of the year (reading, math skills, writing goals?).   We will be writing a small paragraph this week.

We are continuing our reindeer informational reports.  We have written a draft of the introduction and their habitat.  Next steps will be to draft a paragraph about their adaptations and food source.

In math, we are doubling up on learning measurement (standard and metric) while continuing to review double and triple addition with regrouping.  In February, we will begin subtraction with regrouping.

Reading groups are beginning a unit on people who make a difference.  This unit allows us to focus on our informational reading standards through our social studies curriculum.

A field trip permission slip is in your child's folder today.  It is for or FEBRUARY 8th trip to Pizza My Heart on 41st Ave.  Please fill it out and return it ASAP!

Have a terrific week.
