3/25 Update

Hello Room 1 Families,

This is our final week before spring break!   Four more days of learning and we will be busy the whole time!!   We have many small projects to wrap up and we are knee deep into subtraction with regrouping.  As a reminder to you, this is subtraction where we “borrow” value and move it over.   Today I introduces the class to subtracting across zero.  Please watch the Khan Academy video related to the subject.  I showed the kids the same video in conjunction with my lesson and in class practice.

Khan Academy - Subtracting Across Zero Video

Many of the students caught on quickly and many didn’t...Which is perfectly normal!   :).   We will practice all week and then revisit as homework upon our return.  In addition, after break we will be practicing geometry, money and telling time.  I gave a pre-test on telling time to the nearest 5 minutes from an analog clock and  it is clear I have a lot to work on with them.   Please have your kids practice telling time at home using an analog clock or watch.

Our otter reports are almost finished!  Next up, landforms, layers of the earth and catastrophic events that change the earth - including volcanoes!

We are transitioning out of winter and into spring.   You will begin seeing some winter themed items coming home, as well as map skills activities we have completed in class.  I am holding back some special projects and major writing tasks for open house and end of year folders.

It was so nice to see all of the families at our #2 Epic Build share last Friday.  The kids did an amazing job creating Lego robots using the Lego WeDo! Software.   There were some sad faces in class when they had to dismantle their projects.  Our third cycle of coding begins this Friday.  We will be learning to program Minecraft Worlds using a special Minecraft Education edition (***kids can not battle or even access the program from home).   I will share more as I learn and the projects unfold.   I think it will be exciting!

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Hope you have a great week!

Class Basket for Spring Auction Fundraiser

Second Grade tis putting together a ‘Family Night Basket’.

Please help make our grade level basket a big success!

An Amazon Wish List has been created with items that we will use to put the basket together.  Many of the items are in the $5 - $25 range.

Amazon Wishlist Link:  http://a.co/iLjp7Zv

Helpful Information:

  • The wish list is set to have items shipped directly to a HSC member's house  in Aptos.  Parents can also bring items to the office or my classroom for pick up.
  • Parents who want to purchase items on the Amazon list locally, can let me know and I’ll remove it from the wish list so we don’t end up with any duplicates.
  • Parents can also deviate from the list and get anything else they think would add to the basket.  Gift cards to local businesses, etc…
  • Amazon Gift Cards or cash donations can also be made to help purchase needed items for the basket.

The deadline to turn in all items is March 31st, 2019.

If parents ask about donating other items, services, or events for the silent or live auction, we would love to hear from them!  Please encourage them to get in touch with me.  Feel free to give them my email and / or phone number.
