Kindness Quarters For Katy's Kids at Paradise Elementary School

Wise Words

Happy New Year and welcome back to school! We hope you all had a wonderful winter break.

During the break, I was able to deliver a check to Katy Schrum from our Kindness Quarters for Katy Kids at Paradise Elementary School. Our total donation was $4,500! She was so happy to receive the donation, along with knit caps from Mrs. Leonard's 4th grade class and cards from Mrs. Silva's 1st grade class. Katy's school has relocated to Orville, 30 minutes outside of Chico, for the remainder of the year. She is sharing a classroom with two other 2nd grade teachers. They have 47 of their students from Paradise Elementary. Some of their students have relocated to other parts of the state. They are making the best of a difficult situation. Thank you to all of our Sea Star families for showing kindness and donating to this very special cause.

Our next Kindness Project will be to collect soup for our annual Soup-er Bowl canned food drive. Please watch for a note regarding this event soon.

We have a field trip coming up on Friday, January 25th. We will be going to the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History to hear a presentation about the Ohlone People. We will leave Valencia at 8:15 and return in time for lunch at 11:30. We will need drivers and chaperones, so please check your calendars and let us know if you are able to join us. Watch for a note and permission slip to be sent home the week of January 15th. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Winter Break Marshmallow Reading Challenge is due on Thursday, January 17th. To meet the challenge, students need to read at least ten different ways during the break, and record the titles of the books read on the record sheet. Don't forget to decorate the mug! Students can take AR tests on the books they read during the break on Tuesday, January 15th. A special award will be given to students who met the challenge.

Be sure to look for the Secret Words on this page and follow the directions, so your child can receive a special award.

Please ask your child to tell you about the following:

1. Did you meet the Marshmallow Reading Challenge?

2. How many marshmallows are in your mug?

3. What did you like best about your Winter Break?

4. What did you miss about school?

5. What do you want to improve on in 2019?

Ride the Reading Wave!

SURF's Up in Room 18!  Students need to read for 30 minutes at their AR Level each night. Once they finish reading an AR book, they need to take an AR Test in class during our daily SURF Time, or on Fridays during our Computer Time. If they pass the test with a score of 80% or higher, they will receive a sticker on their AR Surfboard. Students also need to work toward their AR Point Goals for each marking period. The fourth marking period is from January 15th to February 22nd.  Students read in class each morning at their AR Level.  They are able to check out books from our class library daily.  If your child needs something to read, remind him/her to check out a book or two. It's Super Uninterrupted Reading Fun! Let's all try to reach our goals!

The Secret Word

The new Secret Words are Happy New Year! Write the word on a piece of paper along with your child's name and parent signature.  Have your child hand me the paper, and he/she will receive a special prize. Ssshhh! Be sure to keep it a secret. I am trying to find out how many people are checking our web page each week.
