Rocky, the Santa Cruz Harbor Seal

Our class mascot is Rocky, the Harbor Seal.  Rocky will be racing home each Friday, with a student from our class, to announce that he/she will be the class Super Sea Star.  Rocky is looking forward to meeting all of our Room 18 families this year.

Wise Words

We enjoyed our field trip on January 25th to the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. The children learned about life during the day and night in an Ohlone village. They also spent time exploring the museum. Thanks to all of our parent drivers and chaperones for joining us. We couldn't have done it without you.

Our next field trip will be on Thursday, February 21st to the Museum of Art and History and Woodstock's Pizza. The children will learn about the history of Santa Cruz, and enjoy a nice pizza lunch. We will need drivers and chaperones. Please check your schedules and see if you can join us. All forms, along with the $9 donation, are due on Monday, February 4th.

Valencia kicked off our 5th Annual SOUPer Bowl Canned Food Drive.  Students wore their favorite team or sports gear to school. We made a prediction graph for the Super Bowl game, and watched You're In the Super Bowl Charlie Brown. Students now need to bring in their cans of soup, or any other canned food items, for the Second Harvest Food Bank. Last year our school collected 8 barrels of food, providing over 4,000 meals. This year we hope to fill 10 barrels. Our class goal is to collect 100 cans. Please fill your bags and return them to school next week. Thanks for helping us continue to spread kindness.

We will have a special Valentine's Day celebration on Thursday, February 14th. Students will participate in 4 Valentine Station Activities before lunch, and we will have a Valentine Party in the afternoon. The four stations will be passing out Valentines to classmates, decorating Valentine cookies, playing a Valentine game, and making a special Valentine. We will need a few parents to help with the stations, and a couple to help out with the party, too. Please watch of a note with more details during the week of February 4th.

There will be no school on Monday, February 11th and Monday, February 18th as we honor President Lincoln and President Washington. We hope you all enjoy your two 3 day weekends.

Be sure to look for the Secret Words on this page and follow the directions, so your child can receive a special award.

Please ask your child to tell you about the following:

1. Who was this week's Super Seastar?

2. Tell me three things you learned about the Ohlone's life during the day.

3. Tell me three things you learned about the Ohlone's life during the night.

4. What did you like best at the museum?

5. Show me the fraction for 4 out of 8. Can you name two equivalent fractions?

6. Show me how to round 256 to the nearest ten and hundred.

7. Say the chant for rounding numbers.

8. Did you finish your five paragraph essay about your New Year's Resolutions?

9. What are your three goals for 2019?

Ride the Reading Wave!

SURF's Up in Room 18!  Students need to read for 30 minutes at their AR Level each night. Once they finish reading an AR book, they need to take an AR Test in class during our daily SURF Time, or on Fridays during our Computer Time. If they pass the test with a score of 80% or higher, they will receive a sticker on their AR Surfboard. Students also need to work toward their AR Point Goals for each marking period. The fourth marking period is from January 15th to February 22nd.  Students read in class each morning at their AR Level.  They are able to check out books from our class library daily.  If your child needs something to read, remind him/her to check out a book or two. It's Super Uninterrupted Reading Fun! Let's all try to reach our goals!

The Secret Word

The new Secret Words are SOUPer Bowl Canned Food Drive.  Write the word on a piece of paper along with your child's name and parent signature.  Have your child hand me the paper, and he/she will receive a special prize. Ssshhh! Be sure to keep it a secret. I am trying to find out how many people are checking our web page each week.
