Rocky, the Santa Cruz Harbor Seal

Our class mascot is Rocky, the Harbor Seal.  Rocky will be racing home each Friday, with a student from our class, to announce that he/she will be the class Super Sea Star.  Rocky is looking forward to meeting all of our Room 18 families this year.

A Day at the Santa Cruz Mission

Wise Words

The children enjoyed our field trip to the Santa Cruz Mission. They learned about the Ohlones, and how their lives changed when they entered the mission system. They toured the old adobe Mission, made tortillas, played the stave game, and looked at some of the Ohlone tools that were used long ago. It was a great day! Thanks to all of our parent drivers and chaperones for joining us. We couldn't have done it without you!

We had an excellent turn out for Open House with 100% in attendance! Thanks to all of our families for coming. We hope you enjoyed your tour, and seeing what it's like to be a third grader in Room 18.

The children had a great time during Day of the Child/Walk For Valencia/Field Day. They played games and jumped in the bounce houses, walked or ran the track, and participated in three relays. It is now time to collect and turn in pledges. Please return pledge sheets and donations by Friday, May 31st. Thank you for your help with this fundraiser.

Our Marionette Puppet Show will be on Thursday, May 30th. The children have been working very hard learning how to be  puppeteers. They are excited to perform for their family and friends. The show will begin at 7:00 in Room 18. Children need to arrive no later than 6:45 to prepare for the show. We will have a celebration after the show in the courtyard. If you would like to bring a treat to share, it would be much appreciated.

Our end of the year Beach Day is coming up soon. Thanks to those of you who have volunteered to drive, or help out at the beach. We will be leaving Valencia at 9:00 on Tuesday, June 4th. We will return to school around 1:00. The children will spend the day playing on the beach or in the water, and will enjoy a nice barbecue lunch. Please watch for the Beach Day Reminder with special details about the day.

Ohlone Projects are due on Friday, May 31st. We are looking forward to the children's presentations on the things they have learned  about our local Native Americans throughout the year.

Our End of the Year Auction will be held on Thursday, June 6th. The children will spend their mini money that they have earned throughout the year. If you would like to donate an item for the auction, please let us know.

Be sure to look for the Secret Words on this page and follow the directions, so your child can receive a special award.

Ride the Reading Wave!

SURF's Up in Room 18!  Students need to read for 30 minutes at their AR Level each night. Once they finish reading an AR book, they need to take an AR Test in class during our daily SURF Time, or on Fridays during our Computer Time. If they pass the test with a score of 80% or higher, they will receive a sticker on their AR Surfboard. Students also need to work toward their AR Point Goals for each marking period. The last marking period is from April 15th to June 3rd.  Students read in class each morning at their AR Level.  They are able to check out books from our class library daily.  If your child needs something to read, remind him/her to check out a book or two. It's Super Uninterrupted Reading Fun! Let's all try to reach our goals!

The Secret Word

The new Secret Words are Marionette Puppet Show.  Write the word on a piece of paper along with your child's name and parent signature.  Have your child hand me the paper, and he/she will receive a special prize. Ssshhh! Be sure to keep it a secret. I am trying to find out how many people are checking our web page each week.
